Graffiti ranges from a “Tag”, a difficult to read stylized scrawl from a single colour of felt or paint, through a “Throw-up” which consists of dark outlined bubble letters, to more grandiose and colourful “Pieces”, a shortened term for “masterpieces”. Acid etching is used to cause permanent or more expensive to fix tags on glass windows and doors.

Taggers would have society believe that much of their handiwork has artistic or cultural value and they themselves should be considered artists. In reality, tags and throw-ups are generally ugly, tagging is a game played amongst their “crews” and they are engaged in expensive vandalism. Their defacement of public property with monikers, symbols and codified messages is hardly artistic. Support stricter criminal legislation on this crime that causes millions of dollars in damage to local communities. See RemoveALL Membership for more information on Graffiti Removal Team's support.

There is also the problem of crime associated with graffiti. Besides being vandals, graffiti writers, who often travel in three or four man groups, or "crews," are also associated with the violence attributed to gangs, because they look like a gang and do their work at night. Graffiti makes people fearful of their own neighborhoods.

This is not to say that "Graffiti Styled Art" is not art. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The difference between Graffiti Art and Graffiti Vandalism is permission. It's not unusual that graffiti is accepted when it is paid for or sponsored by some business, such as restaurants or stores who hire graffiti artists to paint their shops

People have so many different ideas about graffiti. It's really about identity in art. It ceases to be graffiti if it's in a gallery. Graffiti doesn't have to be illegal, but it does have to be big, and on a wall or other large surface where everyone can see it. Free Walls are areas where graffiti is not only tolerated it is encouraged. These have been in use in many international cities to bring beauty and colour to local neighborhoods. If there were public Free Walls set aside for graffiti, graffiti artists would use them. This will not stop tagging, as taggers have no artistic talents to begin with, and tagging is not to be confused with graffiti art.
